📍 Katihar, East Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

A tranquil oxbow lake in the Amdabad area of Katihar, flanked by the Mahananda and the Ganga. Gogabil is Bihar's first Community Reserve and, in 2025, became a Ramsar site of international importance. In winter its year-round waters draw flocks of migratory ducks, geese and waders, making it a rewarding spot for birdwatchers in the state's far east.

About

Gogabil (Gogabeel) is an oxbow lake in the Amdabad block of Katihar district, in the trans-Gangetic plains of far-eastern Bihar. It is flanked by the Mahananda river to the north-east and the Ganga to the south, and retains water for much of the year, making it a stable refuge for waterbirds.

Gogabil holds two notable distinctions:

  • It is Bihar's first Community Reserve, notified in 2019, with part of the wetland owned and protected by local communities.
  • In 2025 it was designated a Ramsar site (Wetland of International Importance), among the newest additions to India's Ramsar network.

In the winter months the lake attracts migratory ducks, geese, storks, egrets and other waterbirds, making it a quiet but rewarding birdwatching destination.
