Why visit

A historic riverside fort on the south bank of the Ganga, built across a rocky projection and once a stronghold of medieval rulers. It served as a base for Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal, in the 18th century. Within its walls lie old gateways, palaces, tombs and colonial-era buildings alongside fine views of the river.

About

Munger Fort stands on a rocky outcrop on the south bank of the river Ganga, its precise origins uncertain but its history reaching back through the Delhi Sultanate and into the Mughal period. In the 18th century it became prominent as the seat of Mir Qasim, Nawab of Bengal, who shifted his capital here and set up an arsenal.

Notable sights inside include:

  • Four large gateways in the massive walls, and the two hills of Karnachaura.
  • The tomb of Pir Shah Nufa and other shrines.
  • Kashtaharini Ghat on the Ganga nearby, and colonial-era administrative buildings.

Today the fort area also houses government offices and schools, and remains a pleasant place to walk along the river ramparts.
