📍 Nalanda, South Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

Cradled by seven hills, Rajgir was the first capital of the mighty Magadha empire and a place sacred to Buddhists, Jains and Hindus alike. The Buddha spent many rainy seasons here preaching on Gridhakuta (Vulture's Peak), and Mahavira too taught in these hills. Today its hot springs, cyclopean walls, ropeway and glass bridge make it one of Bihar's most rewarding destinations.

About

Rajgir (ancient Rajagriha) is steeped in history and legend. Emperor Bimbisara and his son Ajatashatru ruled Magadha from here, and it hosted the First Buddhist Council after the Buddha's death. The valley is ringed by hills bearing the remains of the Cyclopean Wall, one of the oldest defensive structures in India.

Key things to see:

  • Gridhakuta (Vulture's Peak) — the hill where the Buddha delivered important sermons.
  • Brahmakund and hot springs — natural warm-water springs revered for their healing properties.
  • Ajatashatru Fort, Bimbisara's Jail and the Cyclopean Wall — remnants of ancient Magadha.
  • Nalanda-Rajgir ropeway and Nature Safari / Glass Bridge — modern attractions in the hills.

How to reach

  • By Air: Gaya International Airport (75 km) and Patna Airport (100 km) are the nearest airports.
  • By Rail: Rajgir railway station is in the town itself, connected to Patna, Gaya and other centres.
  • By Road: Rajgir is about 100 km from Patna and just 12 km from Nalanda, with regular buses, taxis and autos.

Best time to visit

October to March. The Rajgir Mahotsav (usually October–November) is a colourful cultural highlight.
