Vishwa Shanti Stupa & Ropeway, Rajgir

📍 Nalanda, South Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

Perched on Ratnagiri Hill, this gleaming white marble peace pagoda is one of Rajgir's most iconic sights, offering sweeping views over the surrounding hills. Built by the Japanese Buddhist Nipponzan-Myohoji order, its four golden Buddha statues face the cardinal directions in serene calm. Reaching it by the single-seat chairlift ropeway is a memorable experience in itself.

About

The Vishwa Shanti Stupa (World Peace Pagoda) at Rajgir was completed in 1969 and stands about 400 metres above the valley on Ratnagiri Hill. It is a symbol of world peace and non-violence, and one of several such pagodas built around the world by Nichidatsu Fujii.

Key things to see:

  • The Peace Pagoda — a domed white stupa with four gilded statues depicting the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, teaching and passing.
  • Ratnagiri ropeway — a single-person chairlift that carries visitors up the hill.
  • Japanese Temple (Nipponzan Myohoji) — near the base, with drum-chanting prayers.
  • Panoramic hill views — of Rajgir valley and the ancient Magadhan landscape.

How to reach

  • By Air: Gaya International Airport (75 km) and Patna Airport (100 km) are the nearest airports.
  • By Rail: Rajgir railway station is about 5–6 km from the ropeway base.
  • By Road: The stupa is within Rajgir, about 100 km from Patna and 12 km from Nalanda; autos and taxis reach the ropeway station.

Best time to visit

October to March, with clear skies best for the ropeway ride and hilltop views.
