Darbhanga Raj / Rambagh Palace

📍 Darbhanga, North Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

The historic fort and palace complex of the Darbhanga Raj — one of the largest zamindari estates of British India. Set within walled grounds, it includes the old Ram Bagh Palace along with Anand Bagh and Nargona palaces. A symbol of Mithila's royal heritage, its grand architecture reflects the wealth and cultural patronage of the Maharajas of Darbhanga.

About

The Darbhanga Raj fort, also known as Raj Quila or Rambagh Fort, is the historic seat of the Maharajas of Darbhanga, one of the wealthiest and most influential zamindari families of eastern India. The walled campus, covering roughly 85 acres, contains several palaces built and rebuilt over the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Notable buildings include:

  • Ram Bagh Palace — the oldest palace in the campus.
  • Anand Bagh Palace and Nargona Palace — grand structures, several rebuilt after the 1934 earthquake.

The estate is still associated with the Raj Darbhanga family, and parts of the campus now house educational and institutional buildings (including Lalit Narayan Mithila University). Though some structures are dilapidated, the complex remains a powerful reminder of Mithila's princely past.

How to reach

  • By Air: Darbhanga Airport (7 km) has domestic flights; Patna Airport (140 km) offers wider options.
  • By Rail: Darbhanga Junction (~2 km) is a major railhead well connected across India.
  • By Road: Located within Darbhanga city; reachable by auto, e-rickshaw or taxi.
