Madhubani: Mithila Painting Region

📍 Madhubani, North Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

The heartland of Madhubani (Mithila) painting, a centuries-old folk art tradition of the Mithila region carried on largely by women. Recognised with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2007, the art comes alive in villages like Jitwarpur and Ranti, where you can meet artists, watch them work and buy authentic paintings direct from their makers.

About

Madhubani painting, also called Mithila painting, is a distinctive folk art of the Mithila region in north Bihar, traditionally created by women on the walls and floors of their homes for weddings and festivals. It is famed for bold double-outlined figures, dense infill, frontal composition and natural pigments.

The Madhubani district — with parts of Darbhanga, Sitamarhi and neighbouring areas — is the living centre of the tradition:

  • Art villages such as Jitwarpur, Ranti and Rashidpur, home to award-winning artists.
  • Distinct styles including Bharni, Kachni, Tantrik, Godna and Kohbar.
  • GI-tagged since 2007, protecting the art and supporting thousands of artists' livelihoods.

How to reach

  • By Air: Darbhanga Airport (35 km) is the nearest; Patna Airport (160 km) has more connections.
  • By Rail: Madhubani railway station is on the Darbhanga–Jaynagar line, connected to major cities.
  • By Road: Madhubani is well linked by state highways; buses and taxis run from Darbhanga and Patna. Art villages like Jitwarpur are a short drive from the town.

Best time to visit

October to March for comfortable travel. The art is especially visible around the wedding and festival season (winter) and at regional craft fairs.
