Uchaith Bhagwati Temple

📍 Madhubani, North Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

A revered Shakti shrine near Benipatti in Madhubani, home to an unusual headless form of Goddess Durga (Chhinnamastika). Local tradition holds that the great poet Kalidasa was blessed with knowledge and wisdom here. A Siddhapeeth drawing devotees and seekers, it is especially crowded during Navratri and Durga Puja.

About

The Uchaith (Uchhaith) Bhagwati Temple stands in Uchaith village, about 5 km from Benipatti in Madhubani district. It enshrines a distinctive headless form of Goddess Durga, worshipped here as Chhinnamastika Bhagwati, and is revered as a Siddhapeeth and a centre of tantric worship.

The temple is closely tied to the legend of the poet Kalidasa. According to tradition, the goddess blessed him with knowledge and the gift of words, transforming him into one of India's greatest poets — a story that gives Uchaith a special place in Maithil cultural memory.

Set in the heart of the Mithila region, the shrine is busiest during Navratri and Durga Puja, when devotees from across Bihar and neighbouring Nepal gather for worship.
