Vishnupad Temple, Gaya

📍 Gaya, South Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

One of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in Bihar, enshrining a 40-cm footprint of Lord Vishnu (Dharmasila) imprinted in basalt rock. Gaya is the foremost centre for Pind Daan — ancestral rites for the salvation of departed souls — drawing lakhs of devotees, especially during Pitru Paksha. The present 30 m octagonal-spired temple was rebuilt by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1787 on the bank of the Falgu river.

About

The Vishnupad Temple stands on the bank of the Falgu (Niranjana) river in the heart of Gaya. It marks the spot where, according to legend, Lord Vishnu placed his foot to pin the demon Gayasura underground, leaving behind the sacred Dharmasila — a footprint carved in solid basalt that is the focus of worship.

Gaya is one of the three most important sites in India for Pind Daan, the ritual offering made for the peace of departed ancestors. Pilgrims perform these rites here believing they liberate the souls of forefathers.

  • Dharmasila — the footprint of Vishnu at the sanctum.
  • Falgu river ghats — where ancestral rites and ritual baths take place.
  • Pitru Paksha Mela — the annual fortnight when the town fills with pilgrims from across India.
