📍 Gaya, South Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

A sacred hill north of Gaya whose name means 'Hill of Spirits,' crowned by the Ahilya Bai temple built by Maratha queen Ahilya Bai Holkar in 1787. At its base lies Brahma Kund, where pilgrims bathe before performing pind daan for their ancestors. The summit offers wide views over the Gaya landscape.

About

Pretshila Hill, about 8 km north of Gaya city, is one of the most important sites on the Gaya pind daan circuit. Its name — "Hill of Spirits" — reflects the belief that offerings made here bring peace and liberation (moksha) to departed ancestors, especially those who died unnatural deaths.

At the summit stands the Ahilya Bai temple, dedicated to Yama, the god of death, and built by the Maratha queen Ahilya Bai Holkar in 1787. Below the hill is Brahma Kund, a sacred tank where pilgrims take a ritual dip before performing pind daan. The hilltop offers sweeping views over the surrounding countryside.

  • Note: Reaching the temple involves a climb, so wear comfortable footwear and carry water; the site is busiest during the Pitrapaksha Mela.

How to reach

  • By Air: Gaya International Airport (15 km) is the nearest; Patna Airport (110 km) has more flights.
  • By Rail: Gaya Junction (~8 km) on the Delhi–Kolkata route is the nearest railway station.
