Vaishali: Ashokan Pillar & Relic Stupa

📍 Vaishali, North Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

Vaishali is celebrated as one of the world's earliest republics and a city deeply linked to both Buddhism and Jainism. The Buddha delivered his last sermon here and announced his approaching Nirvana, while Lord Mahavira is believed to have been born nearby. Its well-preserved single-lion Ashokan Pillar and the ancient Relic Stupa make it a serene and historically rich pilgrimage.

About

Vaishali was the capital of the Licchavi republic and a thriving centre in the Buddha's time. After his passing, the Licchavis received a share of his relics and enshrined them in a stupa here. The site's Ashokan Pillar, topped by a single lion facing north towards Kushinagar, is one of the best preserved of Emperor Ashoka's columns.

Key things to see:

  • Ashokan Pillar (Kolhua) — a polished single-lion column beside the Coronation Tank.
  • Relic Stupa (Buddha's ashes stupa) — where a share of the Buddha's relics was enshrined.
  • Abhishek Pushkarini (Coronation Tank) — the sacred tank once used to anoint Licchavi rulers.
  • World Peace Pagoda and museum — modern additions honouring the site's heritage.
