Baba Garibnath Dham, Muzaffarpur

📍 Muzaffarpur, North Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

One of the oldest and most revered Shiva temples of North Bihar, often called the 'Deoghar of Bihar'. The shrine centres on a self-manifested Shivalinga, discovered — as legend tells — when a woodcutter's axe struck it and it began to bleed. It becomes a sea of devotees during the Shravani Mela, when Kanwariyas offer Ganga water to Baba Garibnath.

About

Baba Garibnath Dham (Garib Sthan Mandir) stands near Purani Bazar in the centre of Muzaffarpur city. With a history said to span around three centuries, it is among the most cherished Shiva shrines in the region and a major devotional hub for the surrounding districts.

According to the popular legend, the Shivalinga was found by a woodcutter whose axe accidentally struck the buried linga, which then bled — revealing its divinity. Today it draws steady crowds on Mondays and swells enormously during the month of Shravan.

  • Self-manifested Shivalinga — the heart of the shrine.
  • Shravani Mela — Kanwariyas pour in with Ganga water.
  • Central city location — easy to reach within Muzaffarpur.
