Kakolat Waterfall

📍 Nawada, South Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

One of Bihar's most famous and highest waterfalls, plunging about 150–160 feet from the Ektara hills into a natural pool below. A hugely popular picnic and bathing spot, it draws large crowds during the summer and monsoon. Legend links it to a curse laid on a king who was reborn as a serpent here, freed only by the touch of the Pandavas' waters.

About

Kakolat Waterfall, set amid the forested Ektara hills of the Govindpur block in Nawada district, is widely regarded as one of the biggest waterfalls in Bihar. Water cascades from a height of roughly 150–160 feet into a large natural reservoir at its base, where visitors bathe and swim. The lush green surroundings and cool mist make it a favourite escape, especially during and just after the monsoon.

According to local legend, a king cursed to live as a python dwelt in the pool until he was liberated during the Pandavas' exile, and bathing here is believed to free one from the cycle of rebirth as a serpent. A large fair is held around Vishuwa Sankranti (April) each year.

  • Safety note: The rocks around the fall are slippery and the pool can be deep with strong currents. Avoid venturing close during heavy monsoon flow, keep children supervised, and heed local warnings.
