Karkatgarh Waterfall

📍 Kaimur, West Bihar, Bihar

Why visit

A wide, multi-tiered cascade on the Karmanasa river, roughly 100 feet high and up to 300 feet across, near the Bihar–Uttar Pradesh border. The pools below are a natural habitat for crocodiles, and Bihar is developing the area as a crocodile conservation and eco-tourism site. Its forested setting in the Kaimur hills makes it a peaceful, scenic getaway.

About

Karkatgarh Waterfall is located near Karkatgarh village in the Chainpur block of Kaimur district, on the Karmanasa river which here marks the boundary with Uttar Pradesh. The fall is a broad, multi-stepped cascade about 100 feet high and up to 300 feet wide, tumbling over rocky ledges into deep pools amid dense forest.

The pools are one of Bihar's rare natural crocodile habitats — dozens of crocodiles have been recorded here — and the state government is developing Karkatgarh as a crocodile conservation reserve and eco-tourism destination.

  • Safety note: Because crocodiles inhabit the pools, do not enter or wade into the water. The rocks are also slippery, especially in the monsoon, so keep a safe distance from the edge.

How to reach

  • By Air: Varanasi Airport (90 km) is the nearest major airport; Patna Airport (230 km) is another option.
  • By Rail: Bhabua Road (Mohania) railway station on the Delhi–Howrah Grand Chord is the nearest railhead (~55 km).
  • By Road: From Bhabua (~45 km) take the Bhabua–Chainpur road, then local roads to Karkatgarh village; hire a taxi or auto as public transport is limited.

Best time to visit

July to November, during and after the monsoon when the river is full and the cascade at its widest.
